I’m actually glad and relieved there were no marketing tie-ins to recreate and publish the books because there is no way they could possibly be as excellent as the film made them out to be.

In the annals of “best films with worst 3rd acts”, In the Mouth of Madness is surely in the top 10.

Love those book covers. And I love the whole thing, 3rd act and all.

I feel like the world owes George Romero a second viewing of The Dark Half, because although it has its numerous flaws, it’s still leaps and bounds better than most of the horror drivel that comes out today.

For some reason, this film has been seen as one of Romero’s worst and also one of the worst King adaptations. Watching it again, after having not seen it for years, I was surprised at how, well, good it was. I really don’t get the backlash.

The key thing here that makes the film work so well is that it’s an intelligent movie. The plot is both smart and layered. The characters talk and think things through. There are moral and philosophical ideas thrown into the mix. The Dark Half wants to be a thinking man’s horror film, but drops the ball once it enters bona-fide slasher film territory. Still, it does a whole lot more to engage the viewer than most other horror films and deserves kudos for that.

The subject matter - novelist ‘kills off’ his popular pseudonym, but the pen-name author who never existed somehow comes to life - is endlessly intriguing (if a bit underdeveloped in this film adaptation), and Romero films everything with a sophisticated touch. This is really an elegantly made film. Everything justworks, somehow, and works so well that when the plot starts to thin out a little towards the end, you’re inclined not to care because everything that’s happened before was so well made.

But of course, some people will care, which is fine. For me, though, classy, intelligent horror films are so sparse these days, that I ate this one up whole. Plus, it has really strong performances by Timothy Hutton, Amy Madigan (amazing) and Michael Rooker. And a great Christopher Young score.
